Today I was digging around with old Indian texts about astronomy when I found this.
Note: This passage from a Brāhmaṇa (a commentary on the Veda, of uncertain date, perhaps about 1000 BCE) appears to show an awareness of the sphericity of the earth, since there is always a part of it exposed to daylight.
It is such a remarkable learning that Indians were able to understand the concept of day/night changes and relate the motions of sun with it.
On further reading I found an interesting textbook by CBSE under their Knowledge Traditions and Practices of India series. I am linking Module 1 – Astronomy in India here from their website. It speaks volumes about India’s contribution to Astronomy and narrates many such stories that are unheard of.
